Sandy Springs Takes Measures to Ensure High Standards of Road Construction

Release Date: 5/10/2006

Sandy Springs is committed to protecting motorist’s safety. To ensure proper construction of the 330 miles of City roadways, the Sandy Springs Public Works department has implemented an interim public utility policy to set clear standards for road reconstruction. This is critical if road hazards such as sinkholes and potholes are to be prevented. On Tuesday, May 16, a second reading of the interim policy by City Council will determine if it will be accepted as a City ordinance.

Often, utility work is the cause of roadway failure. For example, when new homes are built and sewer lines are put into the ground, roads must be excavated. When these roads are eventually reconstructed, established standards should be followed to ensure that reconstructed roads are safe.

“Having a policy in place can help ensure a higher standard of road construction and, in turn, help safely maintain our City’s roadways,” said Mark Moore, Sandy Springs transportation planning engineer. “Our roads represent decades of significant citizen investment, and preventing roadway failure due to improper reconstruction can help protect that investment.”
