Johnson Ferry Road from the Chattahoochee River to Abernathy Road


Updated 11/20/2012 - GDOT crews will be shifting traffic on Johnson Ferry Road from North of Columns Drive in Cobb County to Breakwater Ridge on Monday, November 26 from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. The lane shift will include splitting traffic on the Chattahoochee River Bridge. Motorists are asked to use caution and maintain the posted speed limit.

Johnson Ferry will be widened from Columns Drive in Cobb County to Riverside Drive in Fulton County, including the bridge over the Chattahoochee, to accommodate six 12’ travel lanes, a 16’ raised concrete median, 4’ bike lanes, 2’ grass strip and 10’ sidewalks.

Johnson Ferry Road will then drop down to four 11’ travel lanes from Riverside Drive to Abernathy Road, with a 16’ raised concrete center median, 4’ bike lanes, 2’ grass strip and 8’ sidewalks.

Abernathy from Johnson Ferry Road to Roswell Road

Abernathy Road will be widened to four 11’ travel lanes, two in each direction, with a variable 16’ to 32’ raised grassed median and with 4’ bike lanes, 2’ grass strip and 8’ sidewalks.

The intersection at Abernathy and Roswell will be improved by adding dual left turn lanes and a median at the intersection for all approaches.

Project Status

7/13/2012 - Brandon Mill Road, from Abernathy Road to Brandon Ridge Drive, will close beginning Monday, July 16. The closure is needed to facilitate a grade change at the intersection of Brandon Mill Road and River Springs Drive. The River Springs Drive entrance next to Abernathy Road will be closed to all traffic. Brandon Ridge Drive will be accessible from the North end on Brandon Mill Road. Construction is expected to be completed within two months, weather permitting.

Detour signs and message boards will be in place to help route traffic to Riverside Drive, Johnson Ferry Road and back to Abernathy Road.

July 2012 - Demolition of the remaining deck has begun.

July 2012 - Per GDOT, the project is currently 72 percent complete and two percent ahead of schedule with a December 31, 2012 completion date. Bridge concrete deck pours are underway and is 50% complete. After concrete is cured, contractor will resume demolition of remaining deck for replacement.

January 2012

  • Project is currently 62 % complete.
  • Clearing and mass grading is 98% complete.
  • Culvert construction is complete on Abernathy Road.
  • Construction of the new Bridge # 1 over the Chattahoochee River is complete.
  • Demo and reconstruction of the existing bridge # 2 is underway and is scheduled for completion by December 2012.
  • Stage two construction is 90% complete.

December 2011 - Construction is underway. Georgia DOT contractor CW Matthews will be paving new road alignments during the daytime and nighttime hours. Listed below are the traffic shifts that will be in place. Project is approximately 65% complete. Stage two construction began October 2011 that will include widening portions of Johnson Ferry Road from Columns Drive up station to River Valley Road. Traffic was shifted to the new bridge late October 2011. Work has begun on the rehabilitation of the existing bridge with a projected completion of November 2012.

A Public Information Meeting for this road widening project was held in October 2011. You can download responses to the questions posed by members of the public at this meeting.

Project Schedule

Project is currently 2% ahead of schedule to meet a December 31, 2012 completion.
